Solomon Northupââ¬â¢s Twelve Years a Slave Twelve Years a Slave was written by Solomon Northup. The book provides the reader a deeper understanding of the hardest periods in American history ââ¬Å"slavery.â⬠When reading Twelve Years a Slave, people can have a better understanding of how slaves were treated back in the 1800s. Northup discussed in details how slaves were mistreated and cruelly beaten by their masters. Masters were heartless; they would beat their slaves till they were close to take their last breath. Many people feel grateful that they were not born during the 1800s. Northup showed different aspects of slavery. He deliberated his days from a free man, to held captive, serving as a slave for three different masters in the south, to gaining his freedom again after twelve years. The first two chapters of Twelve Years a Slave, the author, Solomon Northup, informed the reader about his life as a free man. He was born a free African American in July 1808 in Minerva , New York. He was the son of an originally enslaved father to the Northup family; this is where Solomon received his last name. However, his father was freed after the Northup family moved to New York. While growing up, Solomon helped his father with the farm duties. Also, he had a degree of proficiency in reading and writing.
